The Garden State Journalists Association has as a subsidiary, the GSJA Scholarship Fund, which annually awards a $1,000 scholarship to a college student who is majoring or minoring in journalism. Ellen Wayman-Gordon of New Jersey City University, Jersey City, is executive director of the Memorial Journalism Award Foundation and heads the selection committee. The scholarship winner receives the award at the GSJA’s annual Awards Dinner held every May. Those who wish to donate to the Scholarship Fund should send the donation to Bill Slossar, GSJA Treasurer, 23 Greenbriar Street, Bergenfield, NJ 07621. Make check payable to the Garden State Journalist Association. Please make a notation in the lower left corner of the check “Scholarship Account.” To qualify for the scholarship, a student must meet the following criteria: the student must reside in New Jersey; plan a career in communications; and be a college junior in good academic standing. The applicant must submit a letter of 300-500 words describing background and career plans, and list home address and telephone number, extra-curricular college activities, and the name and address of the high school from which the applicant graduated. Letters must be typed and double-spaced. Print or video clips and a letter of recommendation from the student’s communications advisor, department head or instructor must be enclosed. The deadline for application is April 1. The scholarship is presented at the Annual Awards Dinner of the Garden State Journalists Association, which is held in May.
